History
Balcones Heights, Texas is near the junction of Interstate highways 10 and 410, six miles north of downtown San Antonio in north central Bexar County. It was developed in the late 1940s and had a population of 950 in 1960 and 2,504 in 1970. The community was incorporated in the 1970s, and in 1990 it had 3,022 residents.
Balcones Heights is a city in Bexar County, Texas, United States. Balcones Heights is considered by locals to be a part of San Antonio, despite the fact that the community was incorporated in 1948 to avoid annexation into the city. A more accurate description of Balcones Heights is that it is an area of San Antonio since San Antonio city limits now completely surround it several miles outward.
The first indoor shopping mall in the city of San Antonio, which opened up with the name "Wonderland Shopping City" and is known today as Crossroads Mall, lies within the borders of Balcones Heights. Balcones Heights draws part of its income revenue from convention and meeting facilities located on mall property.
