History
Poteet, Texas is a city in Atascosa County and is on Farm Road 476 and State Highway 16, twenty miles south of San Antonio in north central Atascosa County. It is part of the San Antonio Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Poteet was named for its first postmaster, Francis Marion Poteet, who operated the post office out of his blacksmith shop beginning in 1886.
In 1896 Mr. and Mrs. Henry T. Mumme settled in the area. Mumme succeeded Poteet as postmaster and in 1904 found artesian wells in the area; this ready source of water made the location more attractive to farmers. Mumme began to grow strawberries on the irrigated land in 1911, and strawberries rapidly became one of the town's major claims to fame. A three-day strawberry festival began in Poteet in 1948 and is still being held there each year.

Geography
Poteet is located at 29°2′23″N 98°34′27″W / 29.03972°N 98.57417°W / 29.03972; -98.57417 (29.039751, -98.574292). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.5 square miles (3.9 km²), all of it land.
